Job Description

Mspark, a leading print and digital media distribution company delivering results by connecting businesses to consumers in rural America seeks an experienced Database Engineer/SQL Developer to join our IT Team located at our Helena, AL Corporate office.

The Database Engineer/SQL Developer is a deeply technical engineer responsible for implementing and maintaining multiple databases throughout the organization. Collaborates with development and BI team members to ensure data accuracy, availability and speed of delivery through heavy use of T-SQL, views, ETLs and SSIS/SSMS.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot nightly ETLs and SSIS jobs and resolve issues including scenarios such as timeouts, out of memory errors, missing or mis-formatted data, ensuring next business day availability for end users

    Build and maintain views, scripts and stored procedures used in jobs that run nightly and more frequently to transfer or sync data between Dynamics CRM Online, Mspark’s custom ERP and other systems

    Add new data to the warehouse by updating warehouse tables and ETLs that source data from Dynamics CRM Online, Mspark’s custom ERP system and other systems using direct table access, APIs and flat files

    Maintain the Dynamics CRM Data Export and Azure DB used to sync data between CRM, ERP and warehouse

    Design additions to the data warehouse and develop/implement new data flows and transforms from source to warehouse

    Work with standard ETL standards and practices, including but not limited to SSISDB environment variables (both project and package level), slowly changing dimensions, and third-party task software (Kingswaysoft)

    Resolve replication conflicts and errors in a merge replication environment, including researching business data accuracy across multiple SQL Server instances

    Ensure changes and additions to databases are acceptable in a merge replication environment

    Design and maintain Dev, Test and Production database environments that sync Dev, Test and Production CRM, ERP and other source instances

    Receive data monthly that must be prepared and uploaded into Mspark’s custom ERP system for processing

    Identify and resolve blocking issues from long running queries

    Troubleshoot query performance with the software development team

    Receive and respond to disk space warnings and take appropriate actions to reduce disk space needs, by eliminating unnecessary ad-hoc backups or shrinking databases, or coordinate with IT Ops to allocate additional space

    Deploy database backups when necessary for testing and/or disaster recovery issues, including scripts to maintain environment specific synonyms and connections

Experience and Skills:

Key Competencies and Attributes

  • College degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or equivalent technical degree.

    Expert understanding of T-SQL, SSIS and TFS

    At least 5 years database administration experience with MS SQL Server 2012 and above  

    Verbal Communication, Requirements Gathering, Software Development Fundamentals, Software Debugging, Technical Leadership, Written Communication

    Ability to identify gained efficiencies through programming. This speaks to someone that can work smarter and not just harder.

    Ability to work both independently and with a team

    Current knowledge of industry software and hardware technologies
